The International Fire Code (IFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) establish standards for emergency planning and preparedness. These standards are incorporated into state law and municipality ordinances.

The following are excerpts from the 2006 International Fire Code, Chapter 4. The reader is encouraged to contact the local fire marshal to obtain information regarding if and how this code is applicable to the reader's facility.

404.2 Where required. An approved fire safety and evacuation plan shall be prepared and maintained… The code categorizes various facilities and occupancies into 13 divisions.

404.3.1 Fire evacuation plans. Fire evacuation plans shall include the following:
